The functions of the kidney in the body are,
1. Filtering the blood and making urine and removing waste products from the body.
2. To help in regulating electrolyte levels that are important for body function.
Urine drains from the kidney into the bladder through a narrow tube that is called the ureter. When the bladder gets filled up and there is an urge to urinate, the bladder empties through the urethra which is much wider tube than the ureter.
The process of kidney stone formation starts with the Chemicals crystallization.. These stones are very tiny when they form, smaller than a sand particle, but gradually grow over time. The size of the stone doesn't matter as much as where it is located. In the majority of cases kidney stones are made of calcium, and hypercalciuria (high levels of calcium in the urine).
When the stone rests in the kidney, generally it causes no problems, but when it falls into the ureter, and as the kidney continues to function and make urine, pressure builds up behind the stone and causes the kidney to swell. This pressure is what causes the pain of a kidney stone. The pressure of urine on the stone in kidney pushes the stone along in the ureter. When the stone moves due to pressure and reaches the bladder, the obstruction in the ureter is relieved and the symptoms of a kidney stone are resolved.
Renal colic (renal is the medical term related to the kidney) appears when kidney stone pass. The intense pain comes on suddenly. There is usually a underlying ache between the acute spasms of pain. It is usually located in the side of the mid back and radiates to the groin. Those affected do not find a comfortable position, and struggle in pain. Sweating, nausea, and vomiting are common features.
Some times Blood may be visible in the urine because the stone has irritated the ureter. Blood in the urine however, does not always mean a person has a kidney stone. There may be other reasons for the blood, including kidney and bladder infections, trauma, or tumors. Sometimes the stone causes complete obstruction and no blood may be traced in the urine because it do not pass over the stone.
